What Are Schools Really Teaching????

I had an odd conversation with Abigail the other day which made me wonder what are schools teaching my child.  Abigail, who is now 8, and I were driving in the car and she said the oddest thing to me.  This is how our conversation went…

A.  “Mommy, I hate that Daddy smokes”

Me.  “I know I do too but he only smokes once in a while and never around us.”

At this point I figured that the conversation would end but with Abigail the conversation never seems to end.

A.  “Well why do people smoke?”

Me.  “I think that people start because they think that they look cool and then it is hard to stop.”

A.  “Well Daddy must be stupid then.”

Me.  “No Abigail a lot of people used to smoke.  They did not know a long time ago that it was bad for you.  Even your grandma smoked right up until mommy was in college.  It was just something that was not thought of as a bad thing for your health like it is today.”

A.  “Oh wow mommy, did grandma do drugs the whole time you were growing up?”

OK this is where I am questioning what my kids are learning in school.  Since when is smoking considered being a drug addiction?  From this point I quickly tried to explain that people who are called drug addicts do drugs that are not legal.  Cigarettes and alcohol are legal but you have to be an adult to buy them.  So by the end of this conversation I was wondering if she raised her hand in the middle of class and told them all that her dad is a drug addict?  You never know with that one.  I am walking on eggshells just waiting for the school to call about my drug addict husband.

Perhaps this makes it clear that 3rd graders are confusing the messages that they are getting.  Perhaps their young minds are just not ready to tell a difference between a smoker, a drug addict and an alcoholic.  My concern comes in that no one is clearing all of this up for them!  They walk around thinking that their father is a druggie because he smokes a cigarette every few days.  Oh and to top it off Emma, my 5 year old, hates Obama because he smokes.  She has learned in school that this means we should not respect our president.  Oh the things that they are learning are astonishing to me.  I would settle for some good old reading skills.  I think that this is an important lesson in assuring that your children get the messages being pushed on them.  You do not want to be a druggie in their eyes like my husband apparently is!

Sick

Do you see any hives?
Do you see any hives?

I think that my favorite kids poems ever is “Sick” by Shell Silverstein.  I used to love this poem more then anything and I cannot tell you the number of times I have read it in my life.  I sit here thinking about this poem for a few reasons:

  1. Abigail keeps faking being sick.  This is what the poem is all about.  It is about a girl who has everything wrong with her until she finds out that it is Saturday.  She is then by some miracle better.  This is now Abigail starring in the role of the faking little girl.  She has gotten one over on me a few times in the past few weeks but now I am on to her.  I do not know why she is avoiding going to school.  It used to be something that she loved!  All I know is that no more children will be staying home with mommy unless they have a fever and cannot move off of the couch.  I do not want to entertain all day.  I want to see Abigail and Emma off to school and play with the baby.  I want to work when the baby is sleeping not entertain an imitation sick child.
  2. The baby is sick:  Yes it is true I think that we have an ear infection on our hands.  This would be the first for baby Analiese which is impressive being that we are moving closer to two with each passing day.  I hate when babies are sick.  They cannot tell you what hurts.  They cannot tell you when their fever is creeping back up.  It makes it all so hard to have to watch them hurt and be sad.  It just breaks my heart how Analiese still wants to be a trooper and has not learned better yet.  She still wants to play even though I know that it hurts for her to hold her head up.  She still wants to come to dinner even though she does not want to eat.  I just find it all so heartbreaking.
  3. I want it to be Saturday:  Yes I know that the week just started but in the poem it is all better because it is Saturday.  I sit here wishing for one of these magical Saturdays!

** oh and to top it off I just picked Emma up from school.  She had one hive and this was apparently a reason to come home urggg**

I hope that you are having a better time this February with your sick little ones!  I am just looking for Saturday!

52 Days Until Christmas

Christmas lights

Image via Wikipedia

When is the right time to decorate?

Year after year people start decorating earlier and earlier. It is something that continues to anoy me. I think that it actually annoys me more then the thought of retailer trying to cram Christmas down our throats. This is because it is the proof I need to see that it is working.

At what point in history was it acceptable to decorate the outside of your home for Christmas November 1st? Hey, I am an understanding person. I know that it is cold in another month. I know that perhaps hanging the lights now while it is still in the 50 degree mark is nice then waiting a month. This does not, I repeat NOT give you the right to light those lights. I know that this is a free country and we can do what we want but get real. By lighting the lights now you are takking away the holiday cheer the rest of us feel after Thanksgiving.

In my mind you decorate outside the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The are has a certain holiday chill to it. It is crisp and cold. While I know that no one likes to be cold, EVERYONE likes to come in to some hot cocoa and snuggle down to their first Christmas movie together.

So please, this season, just wait. It is three more weeks. That is it. Yes it may be a little colder but the memories that you are making for your kids is worth it all. Not to mention that, as I drive around, I do not want to see your lights! I will be checking!

Becca Cosmetics – New Glossy Lip Tint | Angel Kisses

Well I have purchased another Becca Cosmetics product to review. Becca Cosmetics new glossy lip tint angel kisses. I think that it is quite wonderful. To start with it has a strawberry taste to it that makes your lips delicious for you and anyone else who has to pleasure to taste them. It was a great added bonus to this product.

Angel kisses is a wonderful new gloss. As we already know I love lip gloss. It is so sexy and stays shiny for much longer then plain lipstick. Angel kisses has a faint tint of color but I have used it as a clear coat. Last night I colored my lips in with my favorite lip liner. I just love to way the color looks. After that I was able to put angel kisses glossy lip tint over it to make it shine and pop. I cannot wait until I can use it again! I am thinking it will be great over some of my lip stick colors also. I did think that $23 was a little high price wise although I did notice that you use less of it then some other brands which will remain nameless. As always you can go to www.beccacosmetics.com to purchase this product or search it in Google. Be warned though it is currently sold out on their website. It is worth searching for though!

70 days Until Christmas

Shopping For Christmas Dresses

SAN FRANCISCO - NOVEMBER 24: People ride down...

Image by Getty Images via Daylife

OK so here we are 5 days into my 75 days of Christmas plan. So far it has been 5 days and it time to shop. I have saved about $100 between ebay and saving. It is time to get holiday dresses for the girls. I had forgotten to budget for this expense. This will certainly mean that I have to make up this money with more ebay sales.

The challenge is to be able to go out and find dresses for Abigail, Emma and Analiese that all match. I am not sure how Abigail will feel about matching this year. I think that since she turned eight her opinions have become stronger then ever before. I think that we may just have to find one that coordinates for Abby rather then matches.

I have looked online so that I know where I want to shop. My foot is still quite bad so it is important to know where I am heading to limit the amount of time on my feet. I did like some of the dresses at www.Gymboree.com. The black and white dresses are worth stopping by and taking a look. I also liked a few dresses for Emma and Analiese at The Children’s Place. I will also go to take a look at the Gap also. I really think that Abigail would like their little pleated party dress.

I will also take a look at Macy’s, but I think that it will be a little harder in a department store then it is in a smaller specialty store. I know that many people think that it is early to get holiday dresses but they have already been out for weeks. Since I have three kids that I am trying to match I think that it is important to get it now. This will also allow me to get their photos done before the holiday rush begins.

Becca Cosmetics Product Review- New for Fall

There are great new colors at Becca Cosmetics. I decided to try the NEW Avalon Palette. This palette included 2 powder eye colors, 1 cream eye color, 1 cream blush, 1 eye liner and a dual-ended brush. I have found that these colors are great for the fall. I really love the cream eye color. It feels light on my eyes once it is dry. It all lasts through the day without reapplying. The eye liner is great too. It goes on smooth without any clumping. I think that for the price it is worth it! You are going to love it!

10 Potty Training Tips

Children in a doorway in JerusalemImage via Wikipedia

Potty training can be a quick and easy stage in your child’s life if you know what to do and when to do it. Here are Becca’s top 10 tips to help you get started!

Tip 1: Your child should be at least 2 years old. There is some debate about this. I know that my pediatrician has explained that the bladder muscles are not ready before this point.

Tip 2: Do not start training too early. Toilet training should start once you notice that you child is staying dry for long periods of time. Children who go to a specific area to void in their diapers are also showing signs of readiness.

Tip 3: Start small. Begin by buying a small potty and letting your child sit on it with clothing on until they become comfortable with it. Also stick with the small potty in the beginning. Many children have a fear of falling into the big potty which can make potty training stressful.

Tip 4: Once your child seems ready, remove their diaper and sit them on the potty. Bring a book to the potty and read it with your child. This will help your child stay on the potty and hopefully go.

Tip 5: Do not become discouraged. Potty training can take from a few weeks to a few months depending on the child. NEVER yell or scold your child for having an accident. This will make the process stressful.

Tip 6: When your little one uses the toilet make a HUGE deal out of it. Our family has a “poopy on the potty” song that we sing when we have success. A few high fives and a “good job” here and there are also a great way to make your child feel that they have done well.

Tip 7: Reward with a treat. I was against this with my first daughter but half way through potty training realized that it was a great thing. One M&M or other little treat with each success is a life saver. As much as I hate to say it, it worked!

Tip 8: With Emma, my middle child, we developed a chart. We drew a road with a start and a finish. Each time she went potty we placed a Dora sticker on the road. Once she crossed the finish line she was able to pick a toy out of the prize box.

Tip 9: Let your little on in the bathroom when you have to go. I know that, as a mother of three, this can get annoying but it is helpful. After a while I would sit them on the potty every time I was in the bathroom. We would sit and chat until I was done then show off our successes.

Tip 10: Set the timer so they know when to go. The biggest challenge in the beginning is that your child has not yet realized that it is time to go until it is too late. What we do is to set the kitchen timer. In the beginning we set it for 15 minutes. Every time it went off we marched to the potty and tried. After a week we then increased the time to 30 minutes. This helps children remember to go potty and makes the potty training experience less stressful because there are less accidents and more successes!

I hope all of this helps! I would love to hear about your success stories!… Rebecca

Letterboxing

Letterboxing Guide

If you are like we are you are hearing more and more buzz about letterboxing. The local library is doing it; 4H is doing it, so now we are going to give it a try! Abigail and Emma are quite excited about this new potential for summer adventure. It is a wonderful way to have some family fun outside this summer

The first thing we had to find out is what exactly is letterboxing? Here is what we have learned so far…

Letterboxing is an exhilarating treasure hunt which involves stamping, maps and compasses. Individuals write the clues and maps to their letterboxes. Each letter box has at least a stamp and a logbook. I hear that some even have special treasures.

What do you need to go Letterboxing?

What you need is quite simple and cheap! You need a logbook. I was thinking that we would decorate ours. I figure that this will excite the girl that much more. Some diamonds always make thinks more fun! You also need a stamp and stamp pad. This is the mark you will leave once you reach your treasure. Some people recommend buying stamps but we are going to make our own. This will mean that no one else will have the same one. Making a stamp is also a great way to entertain the kids for an hour or so this summer. Some letterboxing hunts require a compass.

How do you find letterboxing clues?

Visit Letterboxing.org to find clues in America, Central America and Canada. Once you find the state and area in which you want to go letterboxing you simply click on a clue. You then print the clue and pack it for your adventure. Follow the instructions to the letterbox.

What do you do once you reach the letterbox?

Once you reach the letterbox you will want to make sure that no one else is around. You do not want to spoil it for others! Next you will open the box and inside you will find a logbook, a stamp and perhaps even a treasure. You will stamp you logbook with the stamp in the letterbox. This shows that you have been to this location. You may want to write the title of the hunt under the stamp. Once you have stamped your book you will then use your stamp to stamp the book. This is your mark that you made it to that letterbox. Some people also write a message. Once you are done place the logbook and stamp back into the letterbox and assure that it is sealed up. Hide it again so that the next person can have as much fun as you did!

How do you make a letterbox?

Putting together a letterbox can be fun for the whole family. You will need a waterproof box. I noticed that many people use disposable storage containers such as GladWare®. Make a stamp for your box and buy a logbook. Then hide your letterbox well. You can be as tricky or simple in your clues as you want. Go ahead and be creative. You then can post your clue on letterboxing.org and visit your letterbox to see who has stopped by to see it!
