My 100th Post!!

I cannot believe it.  This is my 100th post.  I am excited and amazed.  I started blogging so that I could write and express myself.  I am beginning to get to know some of you now and feel great about it all.  100th-post-picture1

I am amazed that I have had 100 things to write about.   You see I love to write and was encouraged to do this by my mother in law.  She feels that writing is something that I excel at and this gives me the chance to do it and work on it while I am home with my babies.  She has always told me to, “write about what you know”.  I think that I have taken these words to heart.  At this stage what I know is my kids.

I certainly do not sit here and claim to know all kids.  You see all children are different.  All children react in different ways!  From this 100th post I hope to bloom and do 1000 more!  I hope to uplift people, help them understand that no life is perfect, help people see that differences are not a bad thing and perhaps even make some friends along the way.

I would also like to say THANK YOU to all of you who have become regular readers.  It makes me so happy when people comment and add to the topic.  Without this no blog would be complete!

Addicted??

television

All this makes me think of is: might as well face it your addicted to… love, right?  Well not in this case.  My family is addicted to TV.  If the boob tube is on they are off.  I find it to be very amazing.  How could three people be so addicted to something so stupid?  Don’t get me wrong.  I love a good show or movie as much as the rest of them.  There are just a few things that I do not understand about the television and it’s powers!  Some examples of my lack of understanding are…

  1. Why is it that once the television goes on it cannot go back off.  They all just sit there.  It is like they have a been entranced and will be hurt if they were to look away even for a moment.
  2. Even though there is often nothing good on they will still watch.  I flip through the channels and see that nothing I want to watch is on and then I do something quite odd… I turn it OFF!
  3. WHy does it have to be on all of the time and loud?  This is perplexing to me.  I just do not understand why three people, with perfect hearing, need to listen to the television so loud.  This is such a problem that I even had Abigail’s hearing tested.  I really thought that she was deaf.
  4. Why can’t they hear?  I call and I call and I call and nothing.  It is not until I turn the television off that they seem to be able to hear again.  Once I have done this tensions are running high in our house again!
  5. Once I turn the television off, you know after I have called them all for about a half of an hour.  This causes arguing close to a person who is addicted to crack!  The thing is that this is usually the only way I can get their attention.

All in all I just have trouble figuring out what makes the television so addictive?  I just do not get it.  I would so much rather be playing a game with them.  I would rather be doing just about anything with them.  This television addiction has become so bad that we have had to establish some rules in our house.  These rules are followed most days although I am not perfect.  There certainly are days that it is just not worth the fight!  So here are the rules which yes as I had stated are sometimes lax.

  1. NO television in the morning before school.  I think that without this rule we would never make it to school on time.
  2. In the evening they can watch 2 30 minute shows. after this the television should go off.  The problem seems to be when I turn it off they get angry.  I mean ANGRY!!!  Abigail will start screaming and throwing a fit, Rob decides that I have committed a sin and will not talk to me and Emma whines.  I know it makes you wonder why I turn it off at all!  Some days I wonder too.
  3. The television cannot be louder then 30.  If this rule is broken it is simply turned off.
  4. The kids are only aloud to watch certain channels and only certain shows on those channels.  They can watch Disney channel, PBS, Nickelodeon (depending on the show), and HBO family.  Rob is not allowed to watch anything rated higher then pg when the kids are awake. I know that this seems to be a no brainer but you would be amazed that the things he tries to watch when they are running around!

All in all I have to say I hate television.  I wish that we could cancel cable and just be done.  I think that it would make my life so much easier!

Valentine’s Day kids Craft

HEART BOXES

valentines-box-1

This is an easy and cute craft for the kids or the moms.  My girls loved it!  Send us pictures of how yours comes out.  We  would love to see all the things that could be done!  You can add a gift inside or just give the box.  The possibilities are certainly endless.   Alli and I had fun with this one.

Difficulty Rating:  2 Stars Beginner 5-100

Supplies:

  1. Heart shaped box
  2. Paint
  3. paint bush
  4. decorations
  5. Glue (depending on which decorations you choose)

Step 1:                                                                               valentines-box-painting1

For step 1 we painted our box.  This came out more like a light stain.  If you are looking for a bolder color you need to prime the box.

Step 2:

Let the box dry.  WHile this would seem like a logical step we felt it was important to include.  If you do not allow proper drying time the decorations may not stick to your heart box.

Step 3:

valentine-box-decorate

The last step is to decorate your heart box.  We chose to do this with all self sticking items.  This meant that we did not have to get the glue guns out and is a great way to accomplish this step.  I believe that when working with smaller children this is the better way to go.  They are able to indepentently complete their craft and bring it home complete rather then leaving it to dry.  AC Moore has great sticker gems, foam hearts, button decorations and much more.  I also think that these would come out great decopauged.

That is it!  This craft is really that simple.  I love the way that it comes out and the kids will have a use for it.  My girls chose to place their Webkinz codes in their hearts.  This is a perfect size and a great way to keep track of those little papers that you are suposed to hold onto for life!  We hope that you enjoy this craft and again please share how yours come out.

Coming soon to www.askbecca.com is a new focus for the new year.  I know that time and time again I am looking for crafts to do with 4H, daisy scouts and brownie scouts.  There are even times I want to do something fun on a snowy day with the kids.  I will be introducing a new section to askbecca.com.

Becca and Alli’s craft corner is a new place to find all of your favorite crafts for kids and more.  Once a week we will be introducing a new, low cost craft that you can enjoy with the children in your life.   Each new craft will have a 1-5 star rating.  This rating will determine the difficulty level of each craft.

We are so excited to be crafting away!  Perhaps we will become the Martha Stewart of the kids crafts world!  You know a girl has to think big.  We will see you here!
