To Cut Or Not To Cut?

This is in fact the question.  My hair is REALLY long right now and I am tossed on what to do about it.  There are a few things at play here.

  1. I like it short but everyone I know says that they hate it when I cut it short… What do I do?
  2. I think I need it dyed!  I have NEVER dyed my hair and I am very scared.  I know women do it each and every day but I just have never wanted to.  That is until I found a few… OK a little more then a few gray hairs!
  3. The cost is huge.  I know that I am worth it but with the move I am trying to save every penny I have.  I think that a rug is a better way to spend $80 then on my hair.  I think that this is in part due to being a mommy.  We start to think that everyone else in the family is more important.  I just am so not sure what to do.
  4. I think that if I grow it a little longer I can  donate it.  This puts us back to number one though and I just am not sure that I want a short haircut again!

As you can tell it is just all so complicated!  I am sure that I will go and get a bunch of hair chopped off soon.  I guess I just have to talk myself into it first!

    Becca,

Thanks for coming to visit me. I think it’s hilarious that you are on this topic today when I just got my highlighted yesterday. I don’t have any words of wisdom about hairdos. Mine is about 1 1/2 inches past my chin which is longer than I’ve had it in a long time. Started coloring about 5 years ago…by coloring I mean highlighting. I love it. Makes my limp hair have more body. It is expensive though.

    Come visit me again. :)

    This is a tough one!

Coloring — I say go for it! If cost is what’s holding you back just do it yourself. I’ve done it for years (I prematurely grayed at 24. 24!!!). If you’re sticking to your natural hair color it’s not too tricky. Start with the type that washes out after 4-6 weeks. It goes away quicker if you don’t like it :)

Length – I like the bottom row, second from the right… but you have to do what you like

    I want after pictures!

I always tell myself “it is only hair. It will grow back.” And then I do it!

Thank you for visiting my blog. This is so funny because I am getting my haircut today and am trying to decide whether or not to go short!~ I think you go with what you feel best with. What you think fits the way you feel the most… hope that helps.

Thanks guys. Coloring is a very scary thing to me. I am still going to give it some thought and Kathy B I will certainly post some pictures once I have picked!

I know how you feel, I have not cut my hair short since 4th grade and that was some horrible, feathered dealy that I am terrified of falling victim to again. Besides if it’s short you have to interact with it way more than I am willing to. So my vote is to get a coupla inches off and leave it at that. Although coloring sounds nice too??? I’m not helpful, I know:(

You should go to In Syle’s hair makeover app -> http://www.instyle.com/instyle/makeover/. It looks pretty good and it really helped me pic a new cut, which I love. I do not by the way work for InStyle (although I’d take a job if they offered!)

As for whether to go short or not, the answer to me is obvious. You said “I like it short” to me you should do what makes you happy and forget the haters. :)

I go to the hairdresser and say, you are the professional, what do you think? I mean- that is what I am paying for- the expert opinion.

The only issue I have now is- who can I trust to cut my hair now? I have only had two people cut my hair in the past twenty years and now I do not live in either of those cities.

So I ask everyone I can “who cuts your hair?”

    Becca,

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

If you like short hair, I wouldn’t worry what other people like! It’s your hair. I’ve had people try to tell me I should grow my hair longer and it just amuses me because our society seems to have us brainwashed by all of those Hollywood images of long flowing locks that long hair is a must for women. Not for me.

I looked at those pictures you had with various hairdos. Not many people could pull off that 3rd one from the left on the top row but you could (I’m assuming that was your face on those pictures?) Also, the 3rd one from the left in the 2nd row looked nice too.

As far as donating your hair, my daughter did that so I’ll tell you what I know. I had looked up the Locks of Love website and they had the criteria listed there. I believe it has to be hair that has never been colored and I think the donation hair needs to be 10 inches long if I remember right. (My daughter’s was 12″ by kindergarten when we donated it because she’d never had a haircut). Anyway, their site can give you the exact rules. You pull the hair back into a ponytail and cut off the ponytail. When you do this, it leaves a shorter spot in the back where the ponytail was cut.

At first, we looked at this shorter spot in the back as a problem. Not for long! We turned it into a “fashion statement” of sorts and cut her hair into what I believe hairstylists call a reverse bob. It’s adorable!! Perfect for her face. This was 3 years ago before it became so popular. You see it all the time now. Think of how Katie Holmes’ hair looks now with the front longer than the back and the full bangs. That’s basically how my daughter’s hair has been since her Locks of Love donation 3 years ago.

Gone are the days of detangling her hair for 30 minutes before school every day. It’s awesome. Her hair is way less work and it looks neater. A win-win.

So my advice would be do whatever makes you happy because it’s your hair. If you are thinking of coloring it, though, that particular organization doesn’t accept dyed hair.

I know there are other places to donate hair too. Diane Lane was on the Today Show once and they cut her hair on-air. I believe it was associated with Pantene hair products somehow. It was another hair donation company.

In any event, you need to do what you’re going to be comfortable with and you can’t worry about what other people think you should do with your hair. It’s your hair. :)

Thanks for visiting my blog. I say, “CUT IT!” My thoughts have always been that it will grow back! I go to the Beauty School near my house. It takes 2-3 hours sometimes but it’s only $12 and they do a great job! I don’t know that I’d let them color it though…I’ve seen how they have colored their own hair!

Interesting post.I really liked your post.I think one can go colouring hair on its own ,if its natural colour as it,s easy & goes soon if someone want to change hair colour.you have given some good short hair styles.i liked the sfirst row second style.i would definitely go for it

  12. I don’t really want my hair to be cut.. I’m really contented of how my hair looks.. I love my hair but I’m always tie my hair but still it looks nice..
