Swine Flu Symptoms: A World Epidemic

Influenza en México

Swine Flu Facts:

Swine flu is so named swine influenza, hog flu or pig flu.  Although this new mutate strain is not true swine flu it is a variation of influenza.  The origins of this new strain are currently unknown although it has been seen in pigs it is not exclusive to swine.  The current worry started in Mexico and has quickly moved to the US.  Living in New York I have to say that I am a little worried.  Schools in the city have been closed.  Schools here, about an hour outside of the city, are talking about the possibility of closing and my mother in law keeps telling me about an influenza book that she read.  According to her this is what was happening in the early 1900′s when the flu took out a huge portion of the population.  Although I keep telling her that she is worrying for nothing and that medical awareness and treatment is much different then it was in 1909 I have to admit that I am a little worried.  Perhaps the worry comes out of a student of mother whom I am acquainted with died from the flu a month ago.  Either way I feel it necessary to know what we can do and what to look for.

Swine Flu Symptoms:

I think that it is important to know what we are looking for.  If we can identify the symptoms we can make smart decisions as to seeking medical attention.

  1. A fever over 100 degrees
  2. cough
  3. Sore throat
  4. Runny nose
  5. Stuffy nose
  6. Muscle pain
  7. Fatigue
  8. Vomiting
  9. Diarrhea

It ius advised that if you have any of these symptoms you call your Dr.  It is also advised that you keep children who are sick home and not have kids out of the house.

Swine Flu Precautions:

  1. Wash you hands often.  Just as we teach kids it is important to wash you hands while you sing happy birthday twice the rule works well for adults as well.  I know I do it… in my head of course!  Frequent hand washing is important.  The amount of time you are washing is just as important.  Make sure that you get in between all of your fingers, under your nails and your wrists also.  DO NOT JUST RINSE!
  2. Use hand sanitizers.  The hand sanitizer must contain at least 60% alcohol.  If you opt for the wipes it is important to assure that you dispose of them properly.
  3. Keep your hands away from your face.  This means no playing with your chapped lips, no biting your nails and no picking your nose.  I felt that I should add that last one for the ones who do it.  You know who you are!
  4. Cover your sneezes.  It is important to use the inside of your elbow or tissues for this.  I know when I was young we were taught to use our hands but that is not the acceptable way anymore.  That just helps to spread germs!
  5. Make sure that you help you kids do the same!

While all of these precautions are effective there is one that I have heard in completely ineffective.  Wearing surgical masks is not advisable.  One would have to change into a new mask every few hours in order for it to be effective.  It was described in a way that made me feel it was good sound advise.  The mask traps germs.  After a few hours it has trapped all of the germs it can and you begin breathing in those germs.  You also use your hands to remove the germ filled mask spreading it to other parts of your body.

I hope that all of this information helps.  I think that if we all remain calm and follow the above precautions we will all come out of this fine.  Oh and one other thing.  It is completely fine to eat pork.  You will not get swine flu by eating pork!  Good luck!

I Am Back!

I realize I have been a little absent this past few weeks.  I think that the heat got to me a little.  In addition to the three 90 degree heat wave we had I have also been bogged down with Girl Scouts.  Cookies came in last week.  Daisies sold 81 cases of Girl Scout cookies.  Yes I said cases.  I have to say that there was a lot of help from other parents and most parents came and took it all out of my house within a few days.  It was nice that they were all considerate enough to notice that they would be in my way!

Over the weekend we added a new family member whom I will post more about tomorrow.  In addition to that we had ballet and a sleepover with three additional girls.  Oh and did I mention that the baby (who will be two in May) had a 104 degree fever all weekend.  It has been a lot of fun!

Either way I am back.  It is a lot cooler the past two days and the baby is feeling a lot better.  I hate when life gets in the way of blogging but it happens.  Thanks for checking in with me!

Big Brother: Lojacking the Kids?

"Wikipedia" encoded in Code 128
Image via Wikipedia

I was out at garage sales this weekend and over heard the oddest conversation.  I did not chime in at the time because it was not my conversation but as I walked away I was appalled!  There were two women at this garage sale who were discussing lo-jacking their kids in case anyone took them.  I could not believe what I was hearing.  Were they kidding me?  Since when do we keep our children “safe” by taking their rights away?  Since when do we treat our kids the same way we treat criminals.  I just could not believe it.

The first thing that came to my mind is that most of the time kids are taken by people they know.  It is not as common that a person drives by and offers them candy.  Most of the time it is a neighbor, a friend or a parent whom you are acquainted.

Another thing that popped in my mind was that cell phones, which a lot of kids have, contain GPS.  This means that as long as they are out and about with their phone they would be findable.

I just think that we have all become far too paranoid.  Why is it that we as Americans have let fear take over.  Why is it that we no longer think that anything is safe?  I just think that kids should be kids.  How would you have reacted if your mother and father sat you down and lo-jacked you?  I am not sure that any of us would be happy.  Perhaps they should have a leash.  Perhaps we should microchip them like we do our pets.  Perhaps they should have a bar code installed at birth. When is it too much?  When will we as Americans stop giving up our freedoms in order to feel safer?

I do not know about you but I ould never lo-jack my kids.  I will let my kids play outside because as I said in “outside will get you” kids are better off playing without me breathing down their necks.  I will never have my kids be able to be tracked that easy.  I want you all to take a few moments to look back at how you grew up.  Now look at what we as a generation have let the fear driven country do to the quality of our children’s lives.  I think that we have to loose the fear and live a little.  Most of all I think that we have to stop letting fear take the place of our rights as Americans.  Over the past 10 years we have lost a lot of our freedom in the name of terrorism.  Not for nothing but I am pretty sure that the terrorists are not going to come and take my kids.  I am pretty sure that they will not bomb my house and I am pretty sure that if they did they would bring Abigail back right away!  She would fight them and be too much of a problem.  At what point is enough enough?

Spring Break Survival: Last Day!

Here we are with 21 hours left of this terribly long Spring break.  I do not understand why it is called a break.  I think that the bigger break will come tomorrow when all of the kids head back to school.  I can see why it is a break for the kids but I did not find that it was all that much of a break.  I think that the kids had an alright time.  Here are a few things that we did.

  • We went to the park which was great.  Not only did the kids have a great time but they also burned off some of that left over winter cabin fever.
  • We had a beauty day where I was able to cut Emma’s hair.  We also did finger nails and toe nails.  The girls had a great time and this gave me great ideas for summer break.  Perhaps we will have theme days this summer.  This will keep the kids interested.
  • We had play dates.  The girls have a friend down the street who they played with a lot this break.  I just have one quick question… when did playing become a date?  I remember I used to just go and knock on the door of a friend or two and see who could play.  All of this prearranging is a little stressful!
  • We went to our friends house and had dinner and the kids watched movies and played games while the adults had adult time.
  • We played Wii for an entire day!  I could not believe how addictive it was.  I think that on a rainy summer day the Wii will come in handy.  We may been have to buy a few more games in order to assure that we can have fun all summer long.
  • We got a little more unpacking done.  This was really important.  I am getting tired of all of the clutter.  I just hate living out of boxes.

I think that we could have done more.  I just am not sure that I can sustain all of this entertaining of children all summer long.  How I wish that I could afford camp for the entire summer!  All I have to say to Spring break is “Hit the road jack!”

Spring Break Survival Guide: Day 7

So we are 7 days into Spring break and I have to say that it has gone much better so far then I expected.  I think that we all may just makeemma-haircut-4 it out of this one alive.   Today is beauty day.  So far I have cut Emma’s hair.  It had become so long that she was sitting on it.  I had to fix it and make it a little more manageable for a 5 year old.  I have told my children that you need a license to cut hair.  This was because when Abigail was 4 she began to cut her own hair.  Since then we have had times when she cut her hair, Emma’s hair and most of her stuffed pet’s hair.  We had to do something.  So we told her that the law says that you have to have a liscense to cut hair in NY.  Now do not get me wrong.  I know that you do have to have a license but today this became an issue.  As I got out my scissors and began to cut Emma’s hair I was reminded that I should have a license.

After assuring Emma that it was not something that she should call 911 for; I began to cut.  I have to say that she is completely confused as to why it is that I can cut her hair.  I told her that moms can cut their own child’s hair or a friend but only moms.  I think that I have left her in a complete and utter state of confusion!  I hope that she completely understands that it is only something that us mommies can do.  I guess time will tell.

Either way what is done is done and it took up some time.  From here we have plans to do out toe nails in hope for warmer weather and perhaps we will do finger nails also.  I think that by this point the day will be done and daddy will be home.  Let’s hope that he comes home a little early.  I am just about Spring break broken.  I so long for Monday when that beautiful yellow bus pulls up to the bus stop yet again.  I have already begun to pray for a speedy summer.

Webkinz Day Extravaganza: Webkinz 4th Anniversary Celebration

KEY BISCAYNE, FL - DECEMBER 21: A Webkinz stu...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Webkinz is celebrating its fourth anniversary with a bang.  Each year Webkinz has an extravaganza and this year will be no different.  From May 1st through the 3rd all stores who sell Webkinz have been asked to participate.  Here are a few highlights on what you can expect:

  1. Stores selling Webkinz have been asked to sell a Webkinz pet for $1 with a $15 purchase from their store.
  2. There will be in store events, giveaways and prizes.

I know that last year we went to the Chester Greenery and bought some flowers and left with two free webkinz.  The kids had a chance to spin the wheel of WOW where no one is a looser.  It was a great time.  I know that all stores do it differently but I am sure no matter what your local store does it is bound to be fun.

Last year the kids each got a Webkinz and I bought two others which were on sale to save for birthday presents for parties in which we are invited to.  I would strongly suggest fining out what your local store is doing.  I know that last year we had a  blast.  I have not stopped in to the Greenery yet to see what she has planned but I am sure that it will all be a lot of fun no matter what it is!

Easter Pictures: Spring Break Survival

Sears Auto 35 TL

OK so as I mentioned I am having a hard time with this entire Spring Break thing!  So today my mother and I dressed all of the kids in their Easter outfits and threw them into the car and were off to Sears.  Now I know what you are thinking… why did you head to Sears.  We were off to Sears for Easter pictures.  We have not had pictures in YEARS.  The last time was when the baby was a month old.  For those of you who do not know she will be 2 in a month!  So needless to say it has been a while.

We have never been to Sears so I was a little bit aprehansive.  It was great though.  They had a kid friendly waiting area which I did not have to wait in because they were ready for us when we got there.  The girls did great although it is difficult to make them all smile at once.  Abigail kept trying to make the baby smile and Emma had the fakest smile.  Even with all of these obsticales we were able to come out of the seccion with a few really nice shots.

So day two of Spring Break has been a success.  We did the pictures, went to lunch, had a play date and now we are getting ready for bed.   I am so happy that it is all working out.  I would say that going and having pictures done is a great way to survive Spring Break!  You should give it a try!  I found that it really occupied a lot of time, the kids had fun and we were out of the house.  We will not discuss how much Grandma spent though!  We will keep that part to ourselves!  Either way day two survived.  Nine days to go!

Spring Break Survival

Oh my… I woke up this morning and remembered something.  IT IS SPRING BREAK.  Now, the words that are to follow are meant with the most love and affection.   I hate Spring Break.  It is not like Winter Break where we all get involved in Christmas.  This Spring Break thing stinks unless you are going away which we of course are not this year!  I remember back in high school and college when I went away with friends.  We had a blast.  One year was Ocean City another year was Disney.  Now I am home with restless kids, a house to unpack and no plan!  So what is a stay at home mom to do with three kids for eleven days?  I am compiling a survival guide in order to make it though.  I need you help though.  Here are a few questions to get started with:

  1. What is there to do that is free?
  2. What can I do with no car?
  3. Is there any activity that you can think of that a 1 year old, a 5 year old, and an 8 year old?  I am drawing a blank!
  4. Is there a magic potion to give children that makes them not whine?
  5. How much is it a mother can drink without it being a problem?
  6. How can I avoid hearing, “I am bored there is nothing to do.”
  7. What fun things can you think of to make the kids tired enough to still go to bed on time?  Oh and I have to be able to do it with my not healed correctly broken foot!

I will spend the day developing a survival guide.  I hope that it works!  Today, I am just going to wing it.  So far we have had 5 fights, Abigail has bitten Emma, Emma has scratched Abigail and the baby is a whining mess!  HELP!

Our finished product!

I love Easter eggs.  They are a sure sign that Easter is closer then we think.  The kids had a blast.  Everyone was smiling and getting along and for the first time ever we had a lot of fun doing it.  We used two different dying kits and I would have to say that the PAAS brand really does work the best.  The other brand did not fully dissolve and I was not as pleased with the colors.  Either way we have some great looking eggs this year.  We used the clear wax crayon and made polka dots and designs.  Daddy even made an egg that says Eat Me.  I hope that you all have a great time dying Easter eggs this year.  I would love to see some pictures.

I had wanted to make the Easter eggs from an earlier post but it was a little too hard this time.  The kids just wanted to dig in.  I am not sure that I really want them to attempt the leaf ones.  I would try on my own but how many hard boiled eggs does one family need?  I think that 18 is more then enough for this family.  I hate hard boiled eggs as does Rob.  Emma will only eat the middle and Analiese just makes a mess with them..  I do not want Abigail eating them all on her own!

Dr. Phil Guests Get Caught… Eaton’s Awaiting Next Step

Image representing Associated Press as depicte...
Image via CrunchBase

I was reading an AP article about Dr. Phil Guests.  In this article it states that a couple who was on the show in the Fall is in hot water with the Secret Service and members of a multi agency Fraud Task Force stormmed the Eaton’s house.  The seized toys, a car and other unlisted belongings.  Now here is the kicker.  This family went on the Dr. Phil show, bragged about stealing $100,000 worth of merchandise, video taped themselves shoplifting from stores with their three children in tow, and then admitted on television that they sell the stolen merchandise on Ebay.

Let me start by saying that the Eaton’s are not all that bright!  They had a good thing going for them.  They were making $100,000 with little work.  Yes there is risk but they were obviously willing to take it.  This part of their plan was semi bright but when they went on a nationally broadcasted show and bragged about getting away with it they had to have known that they  would set some flags soring.  Was the local police department and all of the people in their town just suposed to say, “good for the Eatons?”  How did they not know that by going on a national television show such as the Dr. Phil Show that it would not be long before their little plan began to ravel?  I just do not understand the criminal mind and why it is so stupid!

I hope that they loose everything have to pay money to the stores the merchandise came from and go down!  It is people like this who take things that they are not intitled to receiev who have driven up the cost of everything in this great nation.  I can perhaps excuse a package of diapers or milk being stolen.  Only if the mother has no money and really needs them.  But to make an entire Ebay business out of your shoplifting is just worng.  You and I pay for that each and every day!  We pay for that in taxes, we pay for that in the stores and we pay for that on ebay.

I love ebay as much as you do!  I just think twice when a deal looks too good to be true.  Imagine if these people were to put their minds to something constructive.  Perhaps they should have to spend their time in jail helping stores better reduce the shrink levels.  Perhaps they should spend their time in jail with someone who steals from them.  When you shoplift you are stealing from the people in this country who work so hard for the things that they have.

Either way the Eatons are most likely going to loose their children and as far as I am concerned nothing is worth this punishment.  No amount of money would matter when the end result is the fact that I have endangered my children and their lives as they know it.  So I will sit here in my rented house, with my run down cars and my dreams.  Nothing would be worht me loosing my babies!  NOTHING!!
