10 Potty Training Tips

Children in a doorway in JerusalemImage via Wikipedia

Potty training can be a quick and easy stage in your child’s life if you know what to do and when to do it. Here are Becca’s top 10 tips to help you get started!

Tip 1: Your child should be at least 2 years old. There is some debate about this. I know that my pediatrician has explained that the bladder muscles are not ready before this point.

Tip 2: Do not start training too early. Toilet training should start once you notice that you child is staying dry for long periods of time. Children who go to a specific area to void in their diapers are also showing signs of readiness.

Tip 3: Start small. Begin by buying a small potty and letting your child sit on it with clothing on until they become comfortable with it. Also stick with the small potty in the beginning. Many children have a fear of falling into the big potty which can make potty training stressful.

Tip 4: Once your child seems ready, remove their diaper and sit them on the potty. Bring a book to the potty and read it with your child. This will help your child stay on the potty and hopefully go.

Tip 5: Do not become discouraged. Potty training can take from a few weeks to a few months depending on the child. NEVER yell or scold your child for having an accident. This will make the process stressful.

Tip 6: When your little one uses the toilet make a HUGE deal out of it. Our family has a “poopy on the potty” song that we sing when we have success. A few high fives and a “good job” here and there are also a great way to make your child feel that they have done well.

Tip 7: Reward with a treat. I was against this with my first daughter but half way through potty training realized that it was a great thing. One M&M or other little treat with each success is a life saver. As much as I hate to say it, it worked!

Tip 8: With Emma, my middle child, we developed a chart. We drew a road with a start and a finish. Each time she went potty we placed a Dora sticker on the road. Once she crossed the finish line she was able to pick a toy out of the prize box.

Tip 9: Let your little on in the bathroom when you have to go. I know that, as a mother of three, this can get annoying but it is helpful. After a while I would sit them on the potty every time I was in the bathroom. We would sit and chat until I was done then show off our successes.

Tip 10: Set the timer so they know when to go. The biggest challenge in the beginning is that your child has not yet realized that it is time to go until it is too late. What we do is to set the kitchen timer. In the beginning we set it for 15 minutes. Every time it went off we marched to the potty and tried. After a week we then increased the time to 30 minutes. This helps children remember to go potty and makes the potty training experience less stressful because there are less accidents and more successes!

I hope all of this helps! I would love to hear about your success stories!… Rebecca

Letterboxing

Letterboxing Guide

If you are like we are you are hearing more and more buzz about letterboxing. The local library is doing it; 4H is doing it, so now we are going to give it a try! Abigail and Emma are quite excited about this new potential for summer adventure. It is a wonderful way to have some family fun outside this summer

The first thing we had to find out is what exactly is letterboxing? Here is what we have learned so far…

Letterboxing is an exhilarating treasure hunt which involves stamping, maps and compasses. Individuals write the clues and maps to their letterboxes. Each letter box has at least a stamp and a logbook. I hear that some even have special treasures.

What do you need to go Letterboxing?

What you need is quite simple and cheap! You need a logbook. I was thinking that we would decorate ours. I figure that this will excite the girl that much more. Some diamonds always make thinks more fun! You also need a stamp and stamp pad. This is the mark you will leave once you reach your treasure. Some people recommend buying stamps but we are going to make our own. This will mean that no one else will have the same one. Making a stamp is also a great way to entertain the kids for an hour or so this summer. Some letterboxing hunts require a compass.

How do you find letterboxing clues?

Visit Letterboxing.org to find clues in America, Central America and Canada. Once you find the state and area in which you want to go letterboxing you simply click on a clue. You then print the clue and pack it for your adventure. Follow the instructions to the letterbox.

What do you do once you reach the letterbox?

Once you reach the letterbox you will want to make sure that no one else is around. You do not want to spoil it for others! Next you will open the box and inside you will find a logbook, a stamp and perhaps even a treasure. You will stamp you logbook with the stamp in the letterbox. This shows that you have been to this location. You may want to write the title of the hunt under the stamp. Once you have stamped your book you will then use your stamp to stamp the book. This is your mark that you made it to that letterbox. Some people also write a message. Once you are done place the logbook and stamp back into the letterbox and assure that it is sealed up. Hide it again so that the next person can have as much fun as you did!

How do you make a letterbox?

Putting together a letterbox can be fun for the whole family. You will need a waterproof box. I noticed that many people use disposable storage containers such as GladWare®. Make a stamp for your box and buy a logbook. Then hide your letterbox well. You can be as tricky or simple in your clues as you want. Go ahead and be creative. You then can post your clue on letterboxing.org and visit your letterbox to see who has stopped by to see it!

Why Huggies Are The Best

Why Huggies® Are the Best

Diapers in Town

As a new parent you search and search for the best diaper. All three of my girls have used Huggies®. With Abigail, my oldest who is now 7, we tried every diaper that there is. We then realized that nothing around compared to Huggies®. I know that they cost a little more but here is why it is worth the extra dollar a week.

1. Huggies® whisk moisture away from their bottoms. This means less diaper rashes for you to have to deal with. It also means that you have less laundry to do. And as we all know there is already plenty of laundry when there is a baby in the house!

2. Huggies® NEVER leak. They fit perfect to baby’s bodies and hold a ton of water. I have even used them for splashing around in the sprinkler. If going in a pool I would suggest Huggies® little swimmers.

3. Huggies® diapers require less changing throughout the day. This means that in the long run you spend less money.

4. Huggies® is now a member of the box top program. This was great news in our house! Abigail can bring in the box tops and win a pizza party for her class. Our school this year raised a few thousand dollars in box tops. This means money for special events and new technology! You can also save them until your baby is in school. Many that I have right now expire in 2011 so you can save them for your baby!

I love Huggies® and will use nothing else. I know that with money on all of our minds right now it is hard to think about spending a little more but in the long run you save money because you use less!

Princess Tea Party

For my daughter Abigail’s 5th birthday we had a perfect princess tea party. Although parties at home can sound like a lot of work they can cost significantly less and be remembered twice as long. Some come on in and learn how you too can throw a princess tea party on a small budget! Here is a play by play of what I did.

* Decide on a date and how many children you will invite!

* Buy tea cups, plates and saucers in a thrift store, a garage sale or on craigslist to decorate your table. I spent $5 on a white set of china at the Goodwill. It came with a tea pot that matched and it was cheaper than buying paper products and made the party seem real to Abigail.

* Buy or make invitations. We bought invitations but it could also be fun to make them with your daughter.

* Decide on a menu. I fed the girls fruit salad, veggie sticks and tea sandwiches. Peanut butter and jelly were more popular than the cucumber sandwiches. We also had some confections and pettifores.

* The teapot cake! Click to go to the recipe.

* Activities: We did a ton of things to keep the girls busy.

· Picture frames. I found kits in A C Moore craft store with crowns and the word princess. They were simple to assemble and the girls had a great time making them. Throughout the party my husband took pictures of all of the girls. They were sent home with a new picture frame and a picture already in it.

· Princess Fans: This was an easy craft. All you need is construction paper and a doily. Glue the doily onto the paper and fold as a fan. The girls can then glue gems onto their fan across the top. This was simple, cheap and EASY!

· Dress-up relay race. Divide the girls into two groups. Have a bin with dress-up. We used a crown, a gown, dress up shoes and necklaces. I bought all of it in our local dollar store. Line the girls up in two lines with the dress up about 10 feet away. Have them run to the bin, put all of the items on, take all of the items off and run to tag the next person. The team who goes the quickest wins. I did not do prizes because this often causes tears and I hate to deal with tears.

· Princess Tea party freeze dance. I bought the Disney princess tea party CD and played it and shut it off. Anyone who did not freeze was out and had to cheer on who was left.

· Musical chairs: Also on the Disney Princess CD there was a musical chair song. I put the CD on repeat until we finished.

* Gift bags: I found a great idea for tea bag gift bags that was inexpensive and really cute. Take white craft bags and place items inside. We did some costume jewelry, a notepad and pen, a small tea cup that they could paint at home and stick on earrings. Once the bag is filled you simply fold the upper corners of the bag to the center. You then fold the top down and staple a string to it. Staple a paper name tag at the end of the string. Abigail was even able to help me make them which always make life more fun!

How To Win The Battle At Bedtime

How To Win The Battle At Bedtime

Is everyday a battle at bedtime? I know in our house it is often the worst time of day! I want to pull out my hair and start screaming, but that does not work either. Killing them is not

an option, screaming doesn’t work and ignoring it makes it worse. So what is a frantic mother to do? Now that you know that you are not alone we can tackle the problem. Here are 10 quick tips to try tonight to make your night a smoother, happier one:

1. Put your kids to bed at the same time every night. No exceptions!

2. Have an established routine. We eat dinner, start the bath, read a book and sing one song to each of the girls. They know what is next and after a while they do not ask for more. Develop a routine that works for you. Perhaps a song or a family game. Something quite is best. I would not recommend TV or video games because these tend to stimulate kids and make bedtime more difficult.

3. If your child comes out of their room simply walk them back to bed and leave. Do not talk to them or interact with them. This will show them that you mean business and reduce the number of times that they come out.

4. Make sure that they have everything they need to be comfortable. This means their glass of water, the night light on, their special blankie and anything else they will get out of bed for. Assure that these things are done before entering into the room.

5. NEVER let them sleep in your bed! It breaks the routine and gives them excuses. It also means that you and your spouse can have a bed to yourselves!

7. Avoid beverages with caffeine after 6pm. These will not only keep your little one wired but will also give them a bladder excuse to get out of bed!

8. Give them a few warnings. If bed time is at 8 tell them at 7:45 that they have 15 more minutes. Then 10 more minutes and then 5 more minutes. This helps children who have trouble transitioning.

9. Exercise is something that makes kids tired at the end of the day! Run them until they cannot run anymore. Play a family game of outdoor fun a few hours before bed. Tag, volleyball, a family walk and bike riding are just a few ideas.

10. Do not linger. Leave your child’s room while they are still awake. That will help them to be able to calm themselves and learn to go to sleep without your help.

Family Hiking

Family Hiking

With children getting heavier and heavier these days it is important to go out as a family and have some healthy fun. A nice way to do this is to go hiking on a Saturday morning. There are some things that you should keep in mind.

Do not hike for too long: My kids are usually done after about three hours. You are the best judge of what your children can do. It is important that you remember that you cannot hike as hard, as long and as fast as you were able to without kids.

Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy half way through your hike: This will provide a break to sit and enjoy the nature around you. I have my girls make their sandwiches and pack the rest of lunch with me. This is a great way to get the excited about going.

Make sure that you have an emergency first aid kit: This is a scouting “Be Prepared” essential. You never know what can happen while hiking. It is important that you are ready for anything.

Bring plenty of water: Make sure that you pack enough water for everyone. You do not want anyone to dehydrate. This includes any 4 legged friend you chose to bring with you.

Make it fun: Make sure that you keep your trip fun. Play eye-spy or look at different things along the way. If you make it a stressful thing for your children they will not enjoy it. Kids like to touch everything so have a touch scavenger hunt where they have to find

Choose a hike that is family friendly: Children will not want to be rock climbing for part of their hike on their first time out. Make sure that the first few hikes are easy and increase difficulty as you go. Once you try a harder hike tell the kids what a challenge it can be. It is important to tell them what they have achieved.

I know that we really enjoy hiking with the girls.  I think that perhaps they enjoy it more than we do from time to time.  So get out there and get moving.  It will make you a happier family, will help with weight loss goals, and will lead to family time together.  My favorite time of year to go out for a family hike is in the fall.  There is nothing better than the leaves turning vivid colors and the crisp air.  I am looking forward to many hikes in the weeks to come!  I know that the kids are too!  So what are you waiting for?  Get out there and get hiking! It is impossible not to have a wonderful time!  You will be glad that you did!

Becca Cosmetics

A great cosmetic with a great name!

Being that I too am a Becca I had to go and figure out what Becca cosmetics was all about!  For those of you who know me you know that I do not often wear makeup.  When I do wear makeup I am a little picky as to what I will put on my face.  I have sensitive skin and most low priced makeup does not seem to agree with me.  That is why I was interested in trying Becca Cosmetics.  Te make-up at Becca Cosmetics used to be only for the busy streets of London but is not an international craze!  Their shops are everywhere!  So rather than stopping by the Este Lauder counter in Macy’s I figured I would do my research and discover what Becca Cosmetics is all about.  Here is what I found out.

Becca Cosmetics was founded by Rebecca Morrice Williams after 6 years of scientific development. The Becca products are meant to offer all women a flawless and radiant complexion.Their flagship store was opened in London in May of 2005 and is something to be seen.Makeup stations are away from the hustle and bustle of shop windows. There is an opulence that cannot be disputed within the store. The store offers a relaxing environment where one can sit with a glass of champagne, eat some succulent chocolates and be pampered.Along with makeup stations there are also hairdressing and nail facilities. These are located in the mezzanine which adds to your private, luxurious experience. If you cannot make it to the store be sure to stop by their website and try an item or two. They are not only great products loved by millions but they are also priced right with eyeliner only costing $23.00!  Be sure to stop by http://www.beccacosmetics.com you will be glad that you did.

Since posting this article I have tried out some of Becca Cosmetics products and I have to say that I was nothing but pleased.  Their products were wonderful and I did not have any reactions to them.  I enjoy their eye liner most because it goes on smooth and does not feel heavy when on. also tried some of their lip shades and am pleased to say that they are wonderful as well.  In addition to the color staying on for longer than other brands their lipstick did not dry out my lips at all!
